The London 2012 Paralympic Games were officially opened during vibrant opening ceremony on Wednesday. Britain’s first Paralympic Games gold medallist had the honour of lighting the cauldron. After parade of athletes, Queen Elizabeth II declared the Games open.
The Paralympics, which will last for 11 days, will host about 4,200 athletes from 164 countries, 300 of them from the United Kingdom. They will compete in 21 sports disciplines.
Paralympics chief Lord Coe told the public in his speech at the opening ceremony: “”Everything sport stands for, we’re going to see right here, right now. These will be Games to remember. Prepare to be inspired, prepare to be dazzled, prepare to be moved.”
During the Games, each day about 10,000 tickets will be sold. Organizers say that of 2.5 million tickets 2.4 million have already been sold.
Also, according to the London 2012 Organising Committee, 100,000 tickets for the Olympic Park have gone on sale, which do not give access to the sports venues, but allow their owners to experience the atmosphere of the Park and watch competitions on the big screen, presented by British Airways.
The tickets are on sale for various days throughout the Paralympic Games, and can be bought online at www.tickets.london2012.com.
